Bedroom Tour

I'd been meaning to do a bedroom update ever since I started this blog. It was always hard for me to do so because I either had too many decorations up for a season and I thought the pictures looked much better in natural sunlight (I still have some winter decor up, but it's very minimal).

This is what it looks like when you first walk into my room. I love the two big windows adding lots of light during the day. In the evenings (particularly in the summertime), it's even brighter because the sun is starting to set and my bedroom faces the west side. I painted that one wall a beautiful mint, spring green colour a couple of years ago. It goes so nicely with the light pinks, whites and pastel colours giving the room a sort of fresh, spring-like feel (which I love).

And this is what it looks like when you stand on the opposite side. Note my plush name hanging along the top wall in the mint green, light pink and white (something I've had since I was born!)

There's my dresser and two night-stand tables on either side:

The top of my dresser includes a few smaller jewellery boxes (they mostly contain earrings), a soft, floral holder for my glasses, a tissue box, a hanger for my headband (I intend to buy another one with some small, dainty flowers on it!), a framed photo of a New York trip I went on with friends (August 2011), a smaller picture of myself in Paris (July 2011), and an older Harry Potter chest box that holds some peppermint tea packets and contact cases.

I have a little bedside table (beside my bed, naturally!). There's a telephone, a reading lamp from Ikea, a small fan (for nights my room feels too hot!), my phone charger, and a blue flower-shaped night-light. This night-light is great for whenever I'm watching some late night shows before bedtime and in the mornings when my radio-alarm goes off. It gives off a nice dim glow (not too bright!) and it's within arms reach from the bed. I also always keep a bottle of water handy, some hand cream and as you can see, a bottle of aspirin for headaches or any other pain that might pop up during the night!

The small table on the other side of my dresser contains my current perfumes and moisturisers, my mini table fountain (the sound of the trickling water is extremely soothing!) and the green and pink floral chest underneath contains memories of Brian and I (Sappy, huh?). Lol, it's great though because there's ticket stubs, some pictures of us together and cards Brian has given me for my birthday and Valentine's Day. The unicorn by the fountain (which currently has a broken tail) is something I made for seventh grade art class. It's made out of heavy clay so I use it as my door-stopper.

I also keep a big jar of vaseline present for my always-dry and chapped lips. The snail Beanie Baby reminds me to take it easy and that "slow and steady wins the race!" (I often feel like I need to keep up with my peers in certain aspects of my life, such as moving or getting a car. But the plush snail reminds me that I need to do things at my own pace before I can get to where I need to be. Life isn't a race, and I always tell myself, "Different strokes for different folks").

The back of my door has some hooks from the dollar store where I hang my bath robes and my current go-to purse. (The little note taped there reminds me to keep my door shut tight sometimes, especially if I'm getting changed because the cats tend to paw their way in at random!).

Here's the room from a different angel (I'm standing on my bed!). From the left is another little dresser, the closet in the middle and my desk (where I am currently blogging from).

Below: This cute little dresser contains a simple yet soothing lamp. It's usually always on in the evenings adding just the right amount of light to the room when I'm watching TV or blogging. You can also see a lit-up crystal which is very calming for some dimmer, more relaxing evenings (crystals are said to provide natural, calming effects!). The small digital clock is also my radio alarm I got at Canadian Tire a few years ago for just $7. Waking up to the radio or some low-key music in the mornings is so much better than the ringing sound of an alarm! It's also located across from my bed so I have to physically get up in order to shut it off; it gets me out of bed and prevents me from falling back asleep!

The wall above features a bulletin collage of photos of my friends and family. I absolutely love putting photographs on display and if I could, I'd put up every single one! Since that's not possible without looking like a hoarder, I did it in a collage form. Every now and then, I take down an older photo and update it with a newer one. The other pictures include plaques of I Love Lucy, the Beatles and the Blue Jays' Munenori Kawasaki's autograph.

Below: And here's my busy-looking desk I've had since I was a little girl:

I found this filing-holder in our house and decided to make a place for it on my desk as I seem to always have papers, reminder notes and even receipts lying around. It was originally black so I spray painted it white.

My semi-disorganized make-up stash (Perhaps I should get a little box to hold the blushes and eye shadows).

Hidden between my desk and window is a little stool we had from our basement that holds my work purse and recyclable Shopper's bag.

IMAG0855

I covered the stool with a small white blanket, a pink seat cushion and a spare blue pillow so it looks nicer. It also hides the wires to some plug-ins very efficiently. And some wine bottles ;)

Like so! I often find one of my cats nestled here.

Next, I wanted to show the curtains on both my windows.

IMAG0858
IMAG0858

It's hard to believe but before, I didn't have these awesome blackout curtains I ordered from Sears about three years ago! All I had were the light blinds and the pale pink, airy drapes. During the day, they are great for letting in lots of natural sunlight and they light up the room beautifully without showing too much exposure from outside. But at night, I found my room to be too bright and wanted something that offered a bit more privacy. These blackout curtains were not only super effective but the perfect colour for my room!

IMAG0859
IMAG0859

During the day, I keep the curtains tied up at the sides (which is also great for my palm plant) and at night, the curtains are drawn in adding extreme coziness, comfort and privacy for relaxing evenings.

Down below: I absolutely love this white, shabby-looking table I bought last summer at the local pharmacy (they sell lots of vintage furniture like this!). I spotted this in the store window and was eyeing it all last summer knowing it would make a perfect addition to my room. When I got my full-time job last year, I picked it up immediately and was delighted to see it fit perfectly between my two windows (It also came with a beautiful mirror but I really had no use for it so it was placed in the guest bedroom / my dad's office).

IMAG0861
IMAG0861

I like to use this table as a bit of a display since it's in the centre of my room so I'll put my mini tree there at Christmas, special framed photos, and the most decoration for a new season or holiday. My bulletin board sits above (covered in little reminder notes, some magnets and even more pictures. I actually have to clean it up and re-organize it!).

Below: This is the wall unit that features my favourite dvds, books, and more photos and little trinkets. To the left you can see an old CD tower, a plush toy of my past university's mascot (which I received at graduation), my red mini fridge from Canadian Tire, and a Friends mug-shaped pillow from a New York trip with Brian. The yellow Forever 21 bag on the floor shows where I'll keep some recent shopping purchases (and anything I need to return). I have a faux leather footstool (from our basement) where I keep some recent documents and books on.

I feel very blessed to have a TV in my room with basic-working cable. It's one of the things I love and why I spend so much time in here, especially in my evenings after work. What's better than kicking back after a long work day than lying in your bed and catching up with your favourite show -- with no one to disturb you! I either watch TV from the comfort of my bed or this hot pink chair.

IMAG0865
IMAG0865

When I started university and realized just how many readings they make you do, I needed somewhere comfy and private where I could go to sit down and focus. Doing readings on my bed resulted in me falling asleep and being too comfortable. So my mom picked up this chair from Walmart which was perfect. I keep a reading lamp above and I'm good to go! (The cats love this spot too).

IMAG0864
IMAG0864

Last but not least is my bed. And as you can see, it's really nothing that extravagant. But hey, it does the job!

IMAG0866
IMAG0866

I'm in my later twenties but sometimes, my room still looks like it belongs to a teenager with all the stuffed animals sitting along the wall, lol. I know when it's my time to move out, I won't have this issue and plus, my mom would probably be so sad in the meantime (hard to believe!). So I keep them there anywho during the day and at night, they get stored at the end of my bed. I picked up that palm tree pillow from Walmart a few years back, which matches the painting above nicely. I'm always dreaming of warm places down south and palm trees seem to hit the spot!

IMAG0867
IMAG0867

The bed never had a proper headboard and so my mom found this long, pink pillow that works perfectly when I'm sitting back watching TV or reading.

And there you finally have it -- a proper room update!

I always love looking at other people's rooms or homes for inspiration so if you have any cool photos or websites that show this, please pass them my way :)
