Today I found out one of my inspirations has sadly passed ~ Cynthia Lennon, first (ex)-wife to former Beatle, John Lennon and mother to their only child, Julian.
She died in her home in Spain at the age of 75 with Julian by her side; she had been briefly fighting cancer.
As a Beatles lover, Cynthia was my favourite "Beatle wife." I absolutely adore her biography on John Lennon, "John"; it's one of my all-time favourite books and heavily inspired me to write about my own life. When I was a first year in university, I felt lonely and out of place - but Cynthia's book kept me company. When I should have been doing other readings for my classes, I discovered her book, bought it, and spent the entire weekend absorbed in it. It provided me with such comfort and insight into her exciting and complicated world growing up as a teenager in the 60s and being the wife of John Lennon. I longed for the simple and zestful kind of lifestyle she led.
I purchased her book almost 9 years ago, and I still always go back every year to re-read it. I feel like I'm literally transported back to the 60s whenever I start it. Sometimes I end up reading the whole thing (by "accident!") and other times, I just read through my favourite parts aka how her romance first blossomed with John. I love a good love story, and it's exactly why I loved Cynthia's book so much: her and John shared that young-storybook love, having met as teenagers in college and becoming passionately head-over-heels. He was the bad boy and she was the good girl - a classic match-made in heaven. I lived vicariously through her love story when I was a single gal.
Her book is very easy and simple to understand, unlike other Beatles books I've read where it's filled with lots of stats and information. Her writing also showed that she was a very humble, brave, and relatable classy lady. I always dreamed of one day meeting her and telling her how much I adored her book, or even just searching for an autograph online. Most of them now though, have dramatically shot up in price (almost $300??)
Cynthia Lennon and her story will always continue to be an inspiration for me. Perhaps now, she is happily with John again.
Thanks, Cynthia <3 (Source)
