How I spend my evenings during the week are very precious. There's no better feeling than coming home after a long work day and just distressing. Only problem is the hours are very limited and before you know it, you're up and at 'em again at the break of dawn (can I get an *ugh*). How I choose to spend that time also depends on how tired I am or even how good the weather is (aka if it's nice out, I'm typically more active whereas when it's cold and dark, I'm lazy and hibernate). The odd night, I might be out a bit later than usual too, like at a ball game or out for a few beers or whatever it may be. But typically, I like to take it easy at night with having a full work schedule, and I do my best to make sure those evenings count. Here are some things I do on a typical week night!:
♥ Unpack my work things & get cozy. The very first thing I do when I get home after a long day is unpack some things from work, organize a few things for the next day, and change into some comfy pj's or sweats.
♥ Dinner + Full House (or Family Feud!). It may seem a bit strange but in our house, we rarely ate together around the dinner table. I think it's partly because when we were young, my mom babysit a number of kids after school and so we couldn't exactly get into that tradition. So instead = dinner is grabbed, and an episode of Full House or Family Feud is enjoyed!
♥ Pack lunch & prepare coffee. I make sure to always do this the night before because I know in the mornings, I'm completely hopeless. Ideally, I'd like to get this out of the way right after dinner but sometimes the kitchen is too busy - or I'm too tired and end up falling asleep on my bed for a bit! So I'd quickly make a lunch and get the coffee ready just before bed so I'm set for the early mornings.
♥ Workout. If I'm feeling extra energetic (for whatever unknown reason) then I'll take advantage and use it towards some home exercises. I try and do this at least 2-3 times during the work week (even if my eyes are half-closed, I'll consider even a 15-20 minute session an accomplishment).
♥ Read. Nothing I love more than relaxing on the couch with a green tea and getting lost in a great book. My favourites are reading while listening to the rain outside, a quiet house, or reading outside in the backyard during the summer months.
♥ Watch baseball. Thanks to playing softball, Brian's influence, and a fun Japanese player, many of my relaxing evenings from April-September result in watching the Blue Jays. I've come to really enjoy the game of baseball and the players, and I look forward to those light evenings where I can sit back and watch a good game (given, that they are winning).
♥ DVDs & Shows. TV shows or movies - anything on a week night that may involve Friends, The Hills, or The OC (just to name a few) is a good one for me.
♥ Going for walks. One of my favourite pastimes in the warmer weather is taking those lovely evening walks when the sun is still out till 9. I'll go by myself, with Brian, my sister, or a friend while maybe picking up a sparkling green tea lemonade from the new Starbucks by our place.
♥ Plaza runs. A lot of the times when Brian has an evening off, we may make a quick plaza run. I love picking up a few fun things from the dollar store or buying some snacks from the grocery store (and sometimes, visiting my old co-workers!)
♥ Coffee with a friend. A nice way to spend the evening is catching up with a good friend over a coffee or iced tea. My friends and I love going to Second Cup when we know we have lots to talk about.
♥ Light shopping. I miss the days where I had time off during the week and could go into a sunny, quieter mall without the hassle of the crowds and more energy to shop. I'm hoping this summer I get more days to do that, but currently I'll do some 'light shopping' in my work evenings to get a few things out of the way quicker. Somya and I love going together and picking a few things up here and there.
♥ Activities, such as Softball & Yoga. Warmer weather means more physical activities. I look forward to my softball nights when I can see my team-mates, and Andrea and I are set out to take Yoga together. Yoga will be a new experience for us and I can't wait!
♥ Hobbies, such as Drawing & Piano. I don't focus on my hobbies as much as I probably should, sadly. But when I do get into drawing a good picture or learning a new piano piece, I'll stay focused and work towards completing the current project. I always feel quite satisfied afterwards!
♥ Taking the cats outside. My silly, but good-hearted father got our crazy cats hooked on the outdoors during the warm months. It's great for them to get some fresh air and be outside but it can be such a hassle watching them and making sure they don't take off too far. I look at it as trying to 'spend some quality time' with them!
♥ Make tea. Ever since I got the little kettle for my birthday, I've gotten into the habit of having some green tea in my evenings, and I love it! I used to make a giant pot of espresso after dinner every night but I've noticeably cut back ever since. Having some green tea is very soothing and relaxing for me, and a great way to detox at the end of a busy work day!
Let me know how you guys spend a typical work-week evening! I'd love to hear and maybe get some new ideas. Hope everyone's having a nice Wednesday!
