Beating the Heat

There was a heat warning issued this past weekend in Ontario and my, what a hot one it was! (Not that I'm complaining; I'd rather have hot weather as opposed to the freezing cold of winter!). I love summer but I realize just how easy I can get dehydrated or even heat stroke if I don't take the proper precautions. Here are some ways I stay cool!:

Swimming: Pool

I didn't get around to it this weekend but whenever I can, I pack up my swim gear and head to Brian's for a swim in his pool. It's the picture-perfect way to cool off, have fun in the sun, and get some exercise. In the past, he's gotten toy rackets and we've had fun tossing around a ping-pong ball back and forth (I usually always win ;) )

♥ Ocean

In Florida and Cuba, I took a dip in the beautiful, warm ocean.

♥ Lake

And whenever I go up to the cottage, I take a dive into the lake and enjoyed water-tubing in the past!

♥ Cool Drinks & Food

I haven't gotten around to it this year, but I love the idea of making fun cool drinks, like this Watermelon Slushi shown from Small Home Big Start. Lemonade is always the classic choice, and of course, you can't beat ice-cream and popsicles!

♥ Drink Lots of Water

I am known for bringing a bottle of water with me everywhere I go:

Drinking water is good for you any time of the year - especially in the summer! I find I'm always getting a little dehydrated throughout the day and even though it can be heavy and take up room in my bag, I'm always grateful that I bring a bottle along. Besides coffee and some tea, I drink water endlessly!

♥ Stay in the Shade

I love sitting under a breezy tree with a good book or just relaxing. As much as I love the sun, it's great to take breaks and give your body a chance to cool down from those powerful sun rays. Which leads me to...

♥ Lotion + Hat

A few summer's ago, I went through a "Jersey Shore" / major sun tanning stage - and then this happened:

I look like a tomato!

I hadn't realized back then just how harmful the sun can be on your skin without the proper sunblock and care. Not only that, but too much sun on your face results in wrinkles early on in life! I'll keep my pale-ghost face and try and attempt contouring for colour ;) Now I'm more careful, putting on a hat if I'm going to be out all day and covering areas like my shoulders that I know are a target for burning easily.

♥ Dress Light and Comfortable

My favourite outfits to wear in the summertime are long, wavy skirts, breezy tops, light-material tights and shorts, of course. It can make all the difference to how you're feeling when the sun's beating down on you!

♥ Plan Evening Activities

I love planning day events to take advantage of the warm weather! But if it was anything like we had this weekend (30 degrees + with the humidity!) I try and aim for any potential evening things to do. The evenings are beautiful in the summer time: it's still light out but not extremely hot (again, unless it was anything like this past weekend!), there's typically a light breeze and it's a good excuse to take a walk to get some ice cream :)

♥ Plan Around Cooler Days for Outdoor Activities (like Canada's Wonderland!)

If you're able to, it's always much more beneficial to plan outdoor day events on days that have a beautiful breeze or even some clouds (but not rain!). I remember going to Canada's Wonderland one year when it was SCORCHING hot out, and I had to leave about half way through the day; I felt light-headed and just couldn't handle standing in the long line-ups. Going on a refreshing day made for a much more enjoyable experience.

♥ Stay Indoors and Plan Fun Things!

How great is it coming inside on a hot summer's day and feeling the blast of the cool air conditioning? I love it! It really helps get you through a brutally sizzling day, especially if you can do it in intervals. This weekend, some friends and I got together for a Summerlicious luncheon to escape the desert heat while trying some tasty foods.

How do you beat the heat??
