With the start-up of work last week, I've had to get myself back into a regular routine, and that means managing my mornings. I've never been a morning person (though I always wish I was!) But I can never deny the satisfaction that sleep brings and the comfort of my cozy bed. Since I'm pretty much Oscar the Grouch when my alarm goes off, I've tried to come up with some ways to make my mornings run a little smoother.
Prepare coffee and lunch the night before.
That way when I wake up, all I have to do is turn on the espresso maker and preparing lunch is completely off my hands.
Wake up a little earlier so you can ease into your mornings.
If there's one thing I hate, it's rushing. Especially in the mornings (seriously, who's got the energy for that??) If I can afford to, I like to give myself some time to sit down with my coffee and watch the morning weather network. It's also one of the best times for me to have some alone and quiet time (essential for a non-morning gal!)
Limit phone time.
Some of you may have noticed that I've recently gone on a little social media break: I deactivated my Facebook and disabled my Instagram account (something I didn't know you could do!) This is all temporary, as I just needed a little detox for myself. But I find lately, it's made all the difference in my mornings and my overall mood. I think scrolling through Instagram in the mornings works alright (sometimes, it's the only time you have to catch up on postings!) but the key is to know when to stop. The last thing you need is realizing you only have 5 minutes to jump out the door because you've been so distracted by a post!
Take a quick shower.
You don't have to go all out and wash your hair, but I find a some cool water just to wake yourself up makes you feel fresh and ready to tackle on the day a little better.
Your morning TV shows.
I used to always watch something called Breakfast Television here in Toronto but recently, I've switched over to the Weather Network channel as I find it less overwhelming and more relaxing. I still switch back to the other channel from time-to-time but that early in the morning, I just want something with less of an info overload.
Looking forward to a small breakfast.
I've never been a big breakfast person - until I started having warm apple toaster strudels! They're quick and easy to make, and very delicious without feeling overstuffed.
"Calm" Phone App
I recently downloaded this app and it's been great for helping me to ease into the mornings. Calm lets you choose from a number of sounds and scenes to see and listen to while you're in a state of meditation. Lately I've been having the sound of calming waters and birds chirping lightly beside my bed while I sip my coffee and watch the news. Check out their website here.
Invest in a Simulated Sunrise "Alarm Clock!"
Have you ever heard of this? I love the idea! Rather than waking up to the horrid "Beep, beep, BEEPS" of your alarm clock, you're awoken by a simulation that produces a natural sunrise followerd by birds chirping or the running of a brooke. I hear this is pretty ideal too if you and your partner have different wake-up times for work. I wake up to the radio, which sometimes is pretty good too, but even still I find myself jumping to an early bolt of adrenaline! Check out wakeuptothesunriselight.com.
Check the Weather to Give Yourself an Idea of What to Wear and Prepare in Your Day
I'm constantly checking the weather for the upcoming day and week. Every morning, I step onto our front porch so I can gauge out the temperature and get an idea of what to wear, then give myself some wardrobe choices. This also gives me a better idea of what to expect for my morning commute (Is there snow? Lots of rain? Frost on the windows my car?)
Sometimes just as I'm packing up to leave and doing last minute things in my room, I'll put a Paul McCartney or Beatles song on and it instantly picks up my mood. Headphones are my best friend when I'm commuting and in the car, I usually have the jazz station on in the mornings. Music is food for the soul!
Cuddling With the Cats
I mentioned how I like to limit human interactions in the mornings - but I have no problem if it's one of my cats! Sometimes they'll lie with me while I'm watching TV and having breakfast and other times, I'll make an effort to go and find them and make sure to give them a few extra kisses and cuddles before leaving for work. There's just something so relaxing and soothing about your pets in the midst of our hectic lives. Bless them, huh??
What are your tips for a better morning? Are you a morning person? Or a grouch like me and have trouble waking up? :) (and if so - how do you deal?!)
